... The great Muslim scholar, Ibn Kathir, when discussing the origins of ‘Yajuj wa Ma’juj’ (Gog and Magog) - the people who traditionally inhabited the area between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, which is where the Khazar kingdom was originally situated - in his historical work, Al-Bidayah wa'l-Nihayah (The Beginning and the End), specifically states that "Gog and Magog are two groups of Turks, descended from Yafith (Japheth), the father of the Turks, one of the sons of Noah."

It is interesting to note in passing that one of the questions which Hasdai ibn Shaprut [the treasurer, court physician and minister of (Caliph) Abdar-Rahman III (912-961 A.D.) in Spain] asked in his letter to [Khazar] King Joseph was whether the tribe of the Khazar Jews had any connection with the ‘lost’ ten tribes - that is, the ten tribes of the Tribe of Israel who, as we have already seen, became known as the Israelites (as opposed to the other two, who became known as the Judahites), and who were disowned by the Judahites, and who 'disappeared' after becoming conquered by the Assyrians [in 721 B.C.].

King Joseph categorically stated in his reply that there was no such connection whatsoever. In providing a genealogy of his people, King Joseph, writes Arthur Koestler in his book, The Thirteenth Tribe, "cannot, and does not, claim for them Semitic descent; he traces their ancestry not to Shem but to Noah's third son, Japheth; or more precisely to Japheth's grandson, Togarma, the ancestor of all Turkish tribes."

The Jewish Encyclopaedia says that the Judaist scholars had no doubt as to the genuineness of this correspondence, in which the word Ashkenazi first occurs as denoting this sharply-outlined, hitherto unknown group of "Eastern Jews" and as indicating Slav associations.

This answer of King Joseph is very significant, not only because it demonstrates conclusively that the Khazar Jews are not semitic, but also because, as we shall see in greater detail later on in this book, insh'Allah, the uncle of Togarma, according to Genesis 10.2-3, was Magog.

This means that it is highly likely that the prophecies in The Bible and in the Qur'an, together with the prophecies made by the Prophet Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, concerning Gog and Magog, are directly relevant to the activities and destiny of the Khazar Jews.
... It is therefore clear that the Khazar Jews are not descended from any of the original twelve tribes that formed the original Tribe of Israel, but rather are directly related to the people of Gog and Magog.

Furthermore, it is important to note - since some authors, including Michael Rice, appear to be under the impression that term 'Ashkenazim' originated amongst those Jews of Spain who moved on to Eastern Europe when they were expelled in 1493 - that Ashkenaz was the name of a son of Gomer, who was a son Japheth, a son of Noah. 'Ashkenazi' derives directly from the Khazar Jews, not from the Sephardhic Jews.

Although it can certainly be argued that the Sephardhim and the Ashkenazim are related insofar as they ultimately trace their ancestry back to two brothers, Shem and Japheth, two of the of the sons of Noah, peace be on him, it is clear that certainly by the time of Moses, peace be on him, the descendants of these two brothers had become entirely different peoples, inhabiting entirely different areas of the world, and speaking entirely different languages. No rational being could possibly argue that the original Tribe of Israel and the contemporary Turkic ancestors of the Khazars were one and the same people.

There are other recorded references to contact being made between these two main groups of Jews: Professor Graetz, for example, when describing the eventual collapse [in the second half of Tenth century A.D.] of the Jewish Khazar kingdom, states, "As though Andalusia were a Jewish state, the sons of the last chagan or king of the Khazars, like those of the exilarch, also sought refuge in Spain."

Similarly, Abraham ben Daud in his book, Sefer ha-Kabbalah, written in 1161 [about one-half century before the fall of Toledo to Christians], states that he had "seen in Toledo some of their descendants, pupils of the wise, and they told us that the remnant of them followed the Rabbanite faith."

It would appear, however, from the overall lack of recorded references to contact between these two very different groups of Jews, that any contact between the Khazar Jews in Russia and the Sephardhic Jews in Spain, during the period of Muslim rule in Spain, was of a limited nature - perhaps partly because the Khazars in the East were viewed with a certain degree of suspicion by the Sephardhim in the West.

It is interesting to note that some commentators on the Qur'an do equate these European Khazar Jews who are not Jews with 'Jewj wa ma Jewj - a people who are described in the Qur'an as spreading over the face of the earth and creating mischief. Classical European scholars identify Jewj wa ma Jewj with Gog and Magog, who, as we have already seen earlier, originally lived in the area of land that lies between the Black sea and the Caspian sea - and from whom King Joseph of the Khazars claimed his ancestry.

Indeed it is also interesting to note in passing that the Muslim historian, At-Tabari, relates accounts of at least two expeditions made by the early Muslims to find and examine the wall that had been erected - as described in the Qur'an - by Dhu'l-Qarnayn (who, some say, was in fact Alexander the Great), in order to prevent Gog and Magog spreading south through the Caucasus. D. M. Dunlop refers to these accounts in his book, The History of the Jewish Khazars, stating that the wall in question was "the Caucasus fortification (dating from pre-Islamic times) known as the Wall of Darband", and observing that "successive courses of bright and dark material (copper and iron) are the most prominent feature of both accounts, which of course may be influenced by the Qur'an passage in which iron and molten brass are mentioned.

Ibn Kathir, in his book Al-Bidayah wa'l-Nihayah - The Beginning and the End, provides this general summary - part of which has already been quoted - of the history and future of Gog and Magog (who are usually referred to as 'the Huns' by modern historians), and of the building of the wall by Dhu'l-Qarnayn:

Gog and Magog are two groups of Turks, descended from Yafith (Japheth), the father of the Turks, one of the sons of Noah. At the time of Abraham, peace be on him, there was a king called Dhu'l-Qarnayn. He performed Tawaf around the Ka'bah with Abraham, peace be on him, when he first built it; he believed and followed him. Dhu'l-Qarnayn was a good man and a great king; Allah gave him great power and he ruled the east and west. He held sway over all kings and countries, and travelled far and wide in both east and west. He travelled eastwards until he reached a pass between two mountains, through which people were coming out. They did not understand anything, because they were so isolated; they were Gog and Magog. They were spreading corruption through the earth, and harming the people, so the people sought help from Dhu'l Qarnayn. They asked him to build a barrier between them and Gog and Magog. He asked them to help him to build it, so together they built a barrier by mixing iron, copper and tar. Thus Dhu'l-Qarnayn restrained Gog and Magog behind the barrier. They tried to penetrate the barrier, or to climb over it, but to no avail. They could not succeed because the barrier is so huge and smooth. They began to dig and they have been digging for centuries; they will continue to do so until the time when Allah decrees that they come out. At that time the barrier will collapse, and Gog and Magog will rush out in all directions, spreading corruption, uprooting plants, killing people. When Jesus, peace be on him, prays against them, Allah will send a kind of worm in the napes of their necks, and they will be killed by it.

Clearly this barrier has now long been breached, and Gog and Magog have now spread everywhere, doing what it has been decreed they must do, until it is time for them to meet their final end after Jesus, peace be on him, has returned to this earth.

It is thus even more interesting to note in passing that one of the prophecies in Ezekiel, contained in chapters thirty-eight and thirty-nine, and addressed to Gog the "prince of Rosh" (Russia), states that the people of Gog, from "the land of Magog", will come from their place "in the far north, you and many nations with you" and invade "the mountains of Israel", spreading out "like a cloud that covers the land". Eventually there will be a mighty battle in which the hordes of Gog will be destroyed, and their remains either devoured by carrion or buried in "the Valley of Hamon Gog", near Hamonah.

As D. M. Dunlop points out in his book, The History of the Jewish Khazars

... When Khazar kingdom began to fragment [in the second half of Tenth century A.D.], and they began to disperse, suffering the same kind of trials and tribulations as had their Sephardhic counterparts as they went. The Ashkenazim spread northwards into Russia, and then westwards into the rest of Europe. Wherever they went, they met with considerable opposition from the mediaeval European 'Christians' who, because they mistakenly believed that Jesus had been crucified - an event which, ironically, had never taken place - and that the Jews had been partly responsible for that alleged crucifiction, persecuted them as 'murderers of Christ'. The Khazar Jews had not only inherited the obsolete religion of the Sephardhic Jews, but also the stigma attached to them by the European Christians.

It was partly because of this persecution by the mediaeval European Christians that the European Jews were constantly kept on the move, right across Europe and even into Spain, where they were treated with far greater toleration by its Muslim rulers, in accordance with the Dhimma Contract, until the Spanish Inquisition took over. At the turn of the present century, large numbers of the Ashkenazim migrated to America, their land of hope and promise.

This gradual dispersion of the Khazar Jews up into central Russia and across into the rest of Europe and eventually beyond is described by Michael Rice in his book, False Inheritance. They came to represent an important stratum in the lineage of the Ashkenazi Jews, having migrated into Poland, Lithuania and Hungary... Although some of today's Ashkenazi Jews attempt to deny their origins - for obvious reasons - there is no dispute about the truth of the Khazar Jews' origins and history, which, as Michael Rice points out, were well-established by reputable and distinguished scholars long before they became the subject of any controversy...

When the Muslims in Spain began to grow decadent, and abandon the original teachings of Islam, they became divided amongst themselves and began to fight each other. Under these circumstances, ... the Christians continued to push southwards in what they described as their 'Reconquest'. By 1236 A.D., the Christians had reconquered all of Spain except Granada and the territory that immediately surrounded it. During this process of ‘reconquest’, the Jews ... migrated from Muslim territory to Christian territory whenever it seemed expedient to do so. The Sephardhic Jews had no real allegiance to either the Muslims or the Christians, but simply chose to recognise the rulers who were most likely to treat them the most favourably under whatever circumstances prevailed at the time. ... the Christians were content with this state of affairs, for not only were the Muslims further weakened as a result of the Jews' transfer of alliance, but also the Jews were an important source of much needed income, both as a result of the taxes that were imposed on them by the Christians, and by virtue of the more wealthy Jews being in a position to finance the Reconquest by means of financial loans... Furthermore, since many of the Jews were by Christian standards extremely well-educated and very able administrators, it was inevitable that the Christians Soon began to rely on the Jews to teach them what they did not know and to administer their society on their behalf...

The Moors remained in Spain for nearly eight hundred years. When the Spanish reconquest was completed in 1492 the [Sephardhim] Jews, as well as the Moors, were expelled, and the "centre" of Talmudic government was then transferred to Poland..... The Sephardhim, then neither went to Poland nor mingled with other Jews, when they left the Spanish Peninsula and spread over Western Europe. They remained aloof and apart, "looked down" on others professing to be Jews, and lost their authority. (The Judaist reference works also give curious estimates of the decline in their proportion of Jewry, from a large minority to a small minority; these seem beyond biological explanation and probably are not trustworthy).

At that point, less than four centuries before our own generation, a significant mystery enters the story of Zion: why was the government set up in Poland? Up to that stage the annals reveal no trace of any large migration of Jews to Poland. The Jews who entered Spain with the Moors came from North Africa and when they left most of them returned thither or went to Egypt, Palestine, Italy, the Greek islands and Turkey. Other colonies had appeared in France, Germany, Holland and England and these were enlarged by the arrival among them of Jews from the Spanish Peninsula. There is no record that any substantial number of Spanish Jews went to Poland, or that any Jewish mass-migration to Poland had occurred at any earlier time.

... From the moment when "the centre" was transferred to Poland these Asiatics [the Khazars] began to move towards, and later to enter the West in the guise of "Jews" and they brought Europe to its greatest crisis. Though their conversion had occurred so long before they were so remote that the world might never have known of them, had not the Talmudic centre been set up among them, so that they came to group themselves around it. ...When they became known, as "Eastem Jews", they profited by the confusing effect of the contraction of the word Judahite, or Judean, to "Jew"; none would ever have believed that they were Judahites or Judeans. From the time when they took over the leadership of Jewry the dogma of "the return" to Palestine was preached in the name of people who had no Semitic blood or ancestral link with Palestine whatever!

Thus it is clear that the Ashkenazim were not descended from any of the Hebrews, or from any of the twelve tribes of the Tribe of Israel, and especially not from the tribes of Judah or Levi.

... Once again, a virtually independent state was formed within the Polish state, which like so many states before and after showed the greatest benevolence to the nation-within-nations that took shape within its gates... The Talmudists were allowed to draw up "a constitution", and through the 1500's and 1600's the Jews in Poland lived under "an autonomous government", ‘the Kahal’. In its own territory the Kahal was a fully-empowered government, under Polish suzerainty. It had independent authority of taxation in the ghettoes and communities, being responsible for payment of a global sum to the Polish government. It passed laws regulating every action and transaction between man and man and had power to try, judge, convict or acquit.

... the claim of the Sephardhim to a right to live in the Holy Land was clearly far more convincing than that of the Ashkenazim. Some of them were already settled in the Holy Land, and many others were living relatively near it. Most of them spoke Arabic. They were already an integral part of Middle Eastern culture. A sudden influx of Sephardhim into the Holy Land would not be nearly so dramatic or noticeable as a sudden influx of Ashkenazim from Europe, strangers from a different culture, speaking different languages - especially Yiddish - and from a completely different social background. This is why the Ashkenazim concentrated on creating a need amongst the Sephardhim for a Jewish Homeland by arousing Arab feelings against them.

Once the need for the Homeland was established [1917 Balfour Declaration], and then the Homeland itself was established, it was much easier for the Ashkenazim to enter the Holy Land hiding under the 'Jewish' umbrella: They call themselves Jews, they behave like Jews, so they must be Jews - even though in fact they were, and are, not real Tribe of Israel Jews.

End Times Eschatology in Summary

6. The US engineered the creation of the petrodollar (buying of oil in only US dollar), which now makes oil function as gold, and the US dollar flying even higher. With the petrodollar monetary system and the advent of electronic or digital money, Pax Americana's firm grip on the monetary system and the world economy gives it carte blanche over empowering and oppressing weaker nations. Tetanus Vaccines Found Spiked With Sterilization Chemical To Carry Out Race-Based Genocide Against Africans

Tetanus vaccines given to millions of young women in Kenya have been confirmed by laboratories to contain a sterilization chemical that causes miscarriages, reports the Kenya Catholic Doctors Association, a pro-vaccine organization.

A whopping 2.3 million young girls and women are in the process of being given the vaccine, pushed by UNICEF and the World Health Organization.

“We sent six samples from around Kenya to laboratories in South Africa. They tested positive for the HCG antigen,” Dr. Muhame Ngare of the Mercy Medical Centre in Nairobi told LifeSiteNews. “They were all laced with HCG.”

Chemical causes a woman’s body to destroy its own fetus with vaccine-induced antibodies

HCG is a chemical developed by the World Health Organization for sterilization purposes. When injected into the body of a young woman, it causes a pregnancy to be destroyed by the body’s own antibody response to the HCG, resulting in a spontaneous abortion. Its effectiveness lasts for years, causing abortions in women up to three years after the injections.

Dr. Ngare explained “…this WHO campaign is not about eradicating neonatal tetanus but a well-coordinated forceful population control mass sterilization exercise using a proven fertility regulating vaccine.”

The Kenyan government, of course, insists the vaccine is perfectly safe. Dr. Tabu of Kenya’s Health Ministry even told the media that because some young women are still having babies, the vaccine therefore must not contain any sterilization agent. However, this claim belies the fact that HCG doesn’t work 100% of the time. It only sterilizes the majority of those injected with it, not all of them.

More importantly, the Kenyan Catholic Church is a pro-vaccine organization. “What reason do the Catholic doctors have for lying?” asked Dr. Ngare as reported in the LifeSiteNews article linked above. “The Catholic Church has been here in Kenya providing health care and vaccinating for 100 years for longer than Kenya has existed as a country.”

In other words, the very group exposing the sterilization agenda of the tetanus vaccines is in fact a pro-vaccination group. Yet even they have now come to realize the horrifying truth: vaccines are the perfect vector for governments to deviously insert covert chemical or viral agents which are never revealed to the public.

The smoking gun: a five-shot course over two years

What really raised red flags about this so-called tetanus vaccine was the highly unusual inoculation schedule. This vaccine demanded five shots over two years — a schedule that isn’t used for tetanus.

“The only time tetanus vaccine has been given in five doses is when it is used as a carrier in fertility regulating vaccines laced with the pregnancy hormone, Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG) developed by WHO in 1992.” explained Dr. Ngare.

Furthermore, the vaccine was only being given to women of child-bearing years, not men or women beyond the age of fertility.

As Dr. Ngare explains, the same vaccine sterilization campaign was used in 1993 in Mexico and both Nicaragua and the Philippines in 1994. WHO attempted to bring it to Kenya in the 1990’s, Ngare says, but the effort was stopped by the Catholic Church.

According to Brian Clowes of Human Life International, the United Nations is not refuting the laboratory testing and confirmation of HCG in the vaccines. Instead, it claims some vaccines were “contaminated” in the manufacturing process — an absurd claim that no reasonable person would believe because HCG should never even be anywhere near a vaccine manufacturing operation unless someone put it there deliberately.

LifeSiteNews reports that it:

has obtained a UN report on an August 1992 meeting at its world headquarters in Geneva of 10 scientists from “Australia, Europe, India and the U.S.A” and 10 “women’s health advocates” from around the world, to discuss the use of “fertility regulating vaccines.” It describes the “anti-Human Chorionic Gonadotropin vaccine” as the most advanced.

United Nations, WHO and UNICEF all engaged in vaccination genocide

You will not see this news reported by any mainstream media outlet in the United States. All truth about vaccines is censored, even if the truth is that the United Nations is deliberately engaged in a campaign of vaccine genocide against people of Africa.

What is happening in Kenya is a crime against humanity, and it is a crime committed with deliberate racial discrimination. Normally, the liberal media in the United States would be all over a story involving racial discrimination and genocide — or even a single police shooting of a black teenager — but because this genocide is being committed with vaccines, the entire mainstream media excuses it. Apparently, medical crimes against black people are perfectly acceptable to the liberal media as long as vaccines are used as the weapon.

As this story clearly demonstrates, “vaccine violence” is very real in our world. Vaccines are the perfect weapon for population control for several reasons:

1) Nobody really knows what’s in them.
2) They can be easily spiked with hidden chemicals.
3) They can be administered under the cover of “public health.”
4) All governments and establishment media will deliberately collaborate with the genocide in order to protect vaccines from being recognized as medical weapons against women.

Thus, vaccines can be routinely used to inject populations with birth control chemicals or even stealth cancer viruses. In fact, this is exactly what happened to as many as 98 million Americans during the mass polio vaccinations of the 1960’s and 70’s. The CDC even documented the “accidental” injection of millions of Americans with the cancer-causing SV40 simian virus, but the agency scrubbed all that history from its website in 2013.

In Kenya today, government authorities also claim the sterilization chemical was an “accidental” contamination. That’s the excuse that can always be used as a cover story in weaponized vaccination schemes, where governments deliberately taint vaccines with known chemicals that end life, promote cancer or cause spontaneous abortions.

Vaccines as weapons = Medical crimes against humanity

The deliberate adding of HCG to vaccines without full disclosure to the population is a heinous violation of human rights and human dignity. Here are just a few of the crimes now being committed against humanity under the guise of vaccinations:

CRIME #1) No informed consent. None of these women in Kenya were told the truth that they were being injected with a sterilization chemical designed to cause infertility.

CRIME #2) Race-based genocide. The targeting of Kenyan women with this vaccine is a deliberate selection based on their race. By any reasonable standard, this would be called a racially-motivated hate crime resulting in genocide.

CRIME #3) The deliberate killing of a human being. The spontaneous abortions caused by these HCG-spiked vaccines results in the ending of a human life inside the mother’s body. These killings take place without the consent or permission of the mother, nor any opportunity for defense of the life of the unborn child.

CRIME #4) Violation of Geneva Convention limitations on medical experimentation. All these Kenyan women injected with this vaccine are being used as human guinea pigs in a covert, criminal medical experiment. None of these women voluntarily signed up for this medical experiment, nor were they even informed. This is a medical crime against human beings.

CRIME #5) Crimes against women. Only women were selected for this targeted sterilization vaccine effort, proving that this is not only a race-based crime but also a gender-based crime against women.

If you add all this up, you’ve got weaponized vaccines being intentionally spiked with a known sterilization chemical developed by the WHO, then deployed in a racially-motivated genocidal manner that targets women to be used in an illegal medical experiment administered via vaccine inoculations.

When administered via vaccines, genocide and murder are apparently not news

Yet, despite all this, the mainstream media is perfectly okay with this activity. The World Health Organizations endorses it. The United Nations organizes it. Governments help fund it. Vaccine-pushing scientists excuse it. Media outlets cover it up and censor the story, hoping you don’t read Natural News or Life Site News or WorldTruth.Tv to learn the truth.

When pharmacies in your neighborhood push flu shots and other vaccines, they don’t tell you they are part of a branch of medicine steeped in genocide, racially-motivated hate crimes and a medical war on women. They don’t tell you that flu shots still contain toxic mercury at concentrations 100 times the mercury found in ocean fish. They don’t tell you anything about what’s in those vaccines for the same reason that women in Kenya are never told what’s in them, either.

Vaccines are the perfect weapons against women and children

The truth is that vaccines are easily deployed as weapons against humanity under the false cover story that they are saving humanity. What better way to pursue deliberate chemically-induced population control than to convince people they are being injected “for their own good?”

This is precisely why Bill Gates famously said:

The world today has 6.8 billion people… that’s headed up to about 9 billion. Now if we do a really great job on new vaccines, health care, reproductive health services, we could lower that by perhaps 10 or 15 percent.

Why would Bill Gates be talking about vaccines REDUCING human population if vaccines didn’t secretly contain sterilization agents? Remember, Gates is the same person who has funded all sorts of sterilization technologies including one that blasts men’s scrotums with high-intensity sound waves to make them infertile.

Top tools for human depopulation

Gates is part of a covert medical cabal that believes aggressive human depopulation is urgently necessary to save the planet. This group, which includes many scientists and virologists, believe that the most effective tools for human depopulation are:

1) Vaccines which are covertly spiked with sterilization chemicals.
2) Genetically engineered viruses with a high mortality rate, possibly engineered to target specific races and genetic profiles.

For example, Dr. Charles Arntzen, head of The Biodesign Institute for Infectious Diseases and Vaccinology recently joked about using an engineered virus to cull the human population, saying “That’s the answer! Go out and use genetic engineering to create a better virus. (laughter) Twenty-five percent of the population is supposed to go in Contagion.”

As I wrote on October 22, 2014, many virologists believe humans are nothing more than a “parasite” to be consumed by viruses which are the planet’s “immune response” to human overpopulation. Here’s a passage from the book “The Hot Zone” by Richard Preston, summarizing the way these scientists think:

…the earth is mounting an immune response against the human species. It is beginning to react to the human parasite, the flooding infection of people, the dead spots of concrete all over the planet, the cancerous rot-outs in Europe, Japan and the United States, thick with replicating primates [i.e. humans], the colonies enlarging and spreading and threatening to shock the biosphere with mass extinctions.

Perhaps the biosphere does not “like” the idea of five billion humans. Or it could also be said that the extreme amplification of the human race, which has occurred only in the past hundred years or so, has suddenly produced a very large quantity of meat, which is sitting everywhere in the biosphere and may not be able to defend itself against a life form that might want to consume it…

The earth’s immune system, so to speak, has recognized the presence of the human species and is starting to kick in. The earth is attempting to rid itself of an infection by the human parasite.

What’s extraordinary in all this — both with vaccines and viruses engineered as weapons — is how the most influential people in the scientific community have come to view humanity as an enemy to be destroyed via tools of medicine and science. Frighteningly, modern medical science has the tools to carry out its genocidal assaults on humankind through “accidental” releases of deadly viruses or “accidental” contamination of vaccines with sterilization chemicals.

The evidence of deliberate sterilization chemicals in United Nations vaccines raises the obvious question: Was the recent Ebola outbreak in West Africa also intentional? And what else might scientists, vaccine pushers, world health authorities and governments have in mind for human depopulation in the years ahead?

Is there already something in the food supply that causes sterilization? The answer is a definite YES, and just like the pandemic viruses, it too is genetically engineered.

The five vectors for destroying humanity

These are the vectors for the science-based genocidal assault on humanity:

1) Vaccines
2) Viruses
3) Food
4) Water
5) Chemtrails (i.e. atmospheric deployment of chemicals)

All five of these vectors present “opportunities” for genocidal scientists to achieve their goal of human sterilization and depopulation. That is precisely why anyone who wishes to survive the great human culling now under way must take extraordinary steps to isolate themselves from institutionally-produced food, water and medicine. The only safe food, water and medicine is that which was produced independently and far outside the control of Big Food, Big Ag and Big Pharma.

Pax Brittanica: How the British Divided Up the Arab World

The development of the modern nation states throughout the Arab world is a fascinating and heartbreaking process. 100 years ago, most Arabs were part of the Ottoman Empire/Caliphate, a large multi-ethnic state based in Istanbul. Today, a political map of the Arab world looks like a very complex jigsaw puzzle. A complex and intricate course of events in the 1910s brought about the end of the Ottomans and the rise of these new nations with borders running across the Middle East, diving Muslims from each other. While there are many different factors leading to this, the role that the British played in this was far greater than any other player in the region. Three separate agreements made conflicting promises that the British had to stand by. The result was a political mess that divided up a large part of the Muslim world.

The Outbreak of World War I

In the summer of 1914, war broke out in Europe. A complex system of alliances, a militaristic arms race, colonial ambitions, and general mismanagement at the highest government levels led to this devastating war that would claim the lives of 12 million people from 1914 to 1918. On the “Allied” side stood the empires of Britain, France, and Russia. The “Central” powers consisted of Germany and Austria-Hungary.

At first, the Ottoman Empire decided to remain neutral. They were not nearly as strong as any of the other nations fighting in the war, and were wracked by internal and external threats. The Ottoman sultan/caliph was nothing more than a figurehead at this point, with the last powerful sultan, Abdulhamid II, having been overthrown in 1908 and replaced with a military government led by the “Three Pashas”. They were from the secular Westernized group, the Young Turks. Financially, the Ottomans were in a serious bind, owing huge debts to the European powers that they were not able to pay. After trying to join the Allied side and being rejected, the Ottomans sided with the Central Powers in October of 1914.

The British immediately began to conceive of plans to dissolve the Ottoman Empire and expand their Middle Eastern empire. They had already had control of Egypt since 1888 and India since 1857. The Ottoman Middle East lay right in the middle of these two important colonies, and the British were determined to exterminate it as part of the world war.

The Arab Revolt

One of the British strategies was to turn the Ottoman Empire’s Arab subjects against the government. They found a ready and willing helper in the Hejaz, the western region of the Arabian Peninsula. Sharif Hussein bin Ali, the amir (governor) of Makkah entered into an agreement with the British government to revolt against the Ottomans. His reasons for allying with the foreign British against other Muslims remains uncertain. Possible reasons for his revolt were: disapproval with the Turkish nationalist objectives of the Three Pashas, a personal feud with the Ottoman government, or simply a desire for his own kingdom.

Whatever his reasons were, Sharif Hussein decided to revolt against the Ottoman government in alliance with the British. In return, the British promised to provide money and weapons to the rebels to help them fight the much more organized Ottoman army. Also, the British promised him that after the war, he would be given his own Arab kingdom that would cover the entire Arabian Peninsula, including Syria and Iraq. The letters in which the two sides negotiated and discussed revolt were known as the McMahon-Hussein Correspondence, as Sharif Hussein was communicating with the British High Commissioner in Egypt, Sir Henry McMahon.

In June of 1916 Sharif Hussein led his group of armed Bedouin warriors from the Hejaz in an armed campaign against the Ottomans. Within a few months, the Arab rebels managed to capture numerous cities in the Hejaz (including Jeddah and Makkah) with help from the British army and navy. The British provided support in the form of soldiers, weapons, money, advisors (including the “legendary” Lawrence of Arabia), and a flag. The British in Egypt drew up a flag for the Arabs to use in battle, which was known as the “Flag of the Arab Revolt”. This flag would later become the model for other Arab flags of countries such as Jordan, Palestine, Sudan, Syria, and Kuwait.

As World War One progressed through 1917 and 1918, the Arab rebels managed to capture some major cities from the Ottomans. As the British advanced into Palestine and Iraq, capturing cities such as Jerusalem and Baghdad, the Arabs aided them by capturing Amman and Aqaba. It is important to note that the Arab Revolt did not have the backing of a large majority of the Arab population. It was a minority movement of a couple thousand tribesmen led by a few leaders who sought to increase their own powers. The vast majority of the Arab people stayed away from the conflict and did not support the rebels or the Ottoman government. Sharif Hussein’s plan to create his own Arab kingdom was succeeding so far, if it were not for other promises the British would make.

The Sykes-Picot Agreement

Before the Arab Revolt could even begin and before Sharif Hussein could create his Arab kingdom, the British and French had other plans. In the winter of 1915-1916, two diplomats, Sir Mark Sykes of Britain and François Georges-Picot of France secretly met to decide the fate of the post-Ottoman Arab world.

According to what would become known as the Sykes-Picot Agreement, the British and French agreed to divide up the Arab world between themselves. The British were to take control of what is now Iraq, Kuwait, and Jordan. The French were given modern Syria, Lebanon, and southern Turkey. The status of Palestine was to be determined later, with Zionist ambitions to be taken into account. The zones of control that the British and French were given allowed for some amount of Arab self-rule in some areas, albeit with European control over such Arab kingdoms. In other areas, the British and French were promised total control.

Although it was meant to be a secret agreement for a post-WWI Middle East, the agreement became known publicly in 1917 when the Russian Bolshevik government exposed it. The Sykes-Picot Agreement directly contradicted the promises the British made to Sherif Hussein and caused a considerable amount of tension between the British and Arabs. However, this would not be the last of the conflicting agreements the British would make.

The Balfour Declaration

Another group that wanted a say in the political landscape of the Middle East were the Zionists. Zionism is a political movement that calls for the establishment of a Jewish state in the Holy Land of Palestine. It began in the 1800s as a movement that sought to find a homeland away from Europe for Jews (most of which lived in Germany, Poland, and Russia).

Eventually the Zionists decided to pressure the British government during WWI into allowing them to settle in Palestine after the war was over. Within the British government, there were many who were sympathetic to this political movement. One of those was Arthur Balfour, the Foreign Secretary for Britain. On November 2nd, 1917, he sent a letter to Baron Rothschild, a leader in the Zionist community. The letter declared the British government’s official support for the Zionist movement’s goals to establish a Jewish state in Palestine:

“His Majesty’s government view with favour the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people, and will use their best endeavours to facilitate the achievement of this object, it being clearly understood that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine, or the rights and political status enjoyed by Jews in any other country.”

Three Conflicting Agreements

By 1917, the British had made three different agreements with three different groups promising three different political futures for the Arab world. The Arabs insisted they still get their Arab kingdom that was promised to them through Sharif Hussein. The French (and British themselves) expected to divide up that same land among themselves. And the Zionists expected to be given Palestine as promised by Balfour.
In 1918 the war ended with the victory of the Allies and the complete destruction of the Ottoman Empire. Although the Ottomans existed in name until 1922 (and the caliphate existed in name until 1924), all the former Ottoman land was now under European occupation. The war was over, but the Middle East’s future was still in dispute between three different sides.

The mandates that the League of Nations created after WWI

Which side won? None fully got what they wanted. In the aftermath of WWI, the League of Nations (a forerunner to the United Nations) was established. One of its jobs was to divide up the conquered Ottoman lands. It drew up “mandates” for the Arab world. Each mandate was supposed to be ruled by the British or French “until such time as they are able to stand alone.” The League was the one to draw up the borders we see on modern political maps of the Middle East. The borders were drawn without regard for the wishes of the people living there, or along ethnic, geographic, or religious boundaries – they were truly arbitrary. It is important to note that even today, political borders in the Middle East do not indicate different groups of people. The differences between Iraqis, Syrians, Jordanians, etc. were entirely created by the European colonizers as a method of dividing the Arabs against each other. 

Through the mandate system, the British and the French were able to get the control they wanted over the Middle East. For Sharif Hussein, his sons were allowed to rule over these mandates under British “protection”. Prince Faisal was made king of Iraq and Syria and Prince Abdullah was made king of Jordan. In practice, however, the British and French had real authority over these areas.

For the Zionists, they were allowed by the British government to settle in Palestine, although with limitations. The British did not want to anger the Arabs already living in Palestine, so they tried to limit the number of Jews allowed to migrate to Palestine. This angered the Zionists, who looked for illegal ways to immigrate throughout the 1920s-1940s, as well as the Arabs, who saw the immigration as encroachment on land that had been theirs since Salah al-Din liberated it in 1187.

The political mess that Britain created in the aftermath of WWI remains today. The competing agreements and the subsequent countries that were created to disunite Muslims from each other led to political instability throughout the Middle East. The rise of Zionism coupled with the disunity of the Muslims in that region has led to corrupt governments and economic decline for the Middle East as a whole. The divisions that the British instituted in the Muslim world remain strong today, despite being wholly created within the past 100 years.
